Possible Tornado? And a VERY long trip to the farm!

We headed to the farm on Tuesday afternoon. Just before the Louisiana -Mississippi line the sky turned totally black. It didn’t take much common sense to pull off the road and go into the closest building – which happened to be a very welcoming truck stop. We were not the only people pulling over due to the weather. Our phone weather alarms sounded before we even exited our vehicle. After 15 minutes, and lots of hard rain and wind, the sky was again grey, so we continued our trip. Within minutes, we turned onto our shortcut in Woodville and soon realized our mistake. Trees and wires were across the road. We backed up and returned to the main highway. All along the road, there was evidence of tree damage.

We made it through town, and turned onto another road to reach the farm, only to discover a line of vehicles. We never saw the tree or trees because we were too far from the mess.

A tractor soon passed us and cleared the road of the trees. This delay took about 20 minutes. As we turned onto the home stretch, we thought we were in the clear. Not so! Notice the dump truck in front of us in this line? Well, it was headed in the same direction as we were.

After a few minutes, the road crew sorted out the vehicles and gave us a lane to continue down the road. We made it another mile before the road was again blocked. This time, two trees were across the road.

Luckily, many people in this area have chain saws in their vehicles and they are not afraid to use them.

Within 30 minutes, the much wetter volunteers had cleared the two trees from half of the road. Once the road was passable on one side, all chainsaws and volunteers disappeared back into their vehicles. The rest of our road was clear all the way to the farm. Total travel time was 3.5 hours instead of an hour- be we did arrive safely!

Whatever wind system downed the trees also played havoc with our corn! This morning, after the rain, we tied up the corn and harvested a few ears. We will wait until Friday when Ike is visiting to harvest some more corn.
