This heat has got to give! Pumpkins, Mud dauber, Fire, and English tip.

Between the deer eating the leaves and the heat cooking the vines, this pumpkin said “I give up”. It weighted in at 28.8 pounds.

Look at the different types of Mud dauber nests. “Mud dauber” is a name applied to a number of wasp species that build their nests from mud. Wasp that use mud for their nests belong to either the family Sphecidae or Crabronidae. Most of these wasp do not live in colonies, but prefer to live alone, and most feed on spiders and other insects. Unlike the rumor, these wasp can and do sting if threatened, but they are not aggressive if left alone. The mud dauber lays an egg in each mud cell. The cell is stocked with insect prey. When the egg hatches, the larva feeds on the prey. After the larva develops into a wasp, the wasp chews a hole in the mud wall and emerges to repeat the cycle.

Science Tip of the Day: Fire is a Chemical Reaction. What is necessary to have a FIRE? The answer is Heat, Fuel, Oxygen– If you are missing any one of these components, you will not have a fire. Fire is the rapid oxidation of a fuel and heat is required to initiate the chemical reaction. We all know that O2 is in the air we breathe. After O2 combines with the fuel, the fuel is physically changed.

The air we breathe is composed mainly of nitrogen and oxygen. Nitrogen (N2) makes up 78% of our air. Oxygen (O2) makes up close to 21% of our air. Argon is just under 1% and carbon dioxide (CO2) is .04%. (There are a few other components in very small amounts). Many items will combine with the oxygen in the air to give off heat and a flame, but heat is usually required to initiate this process. When the fireman taught you to “STOP, DROP, and Roll”, it was because rolling on the ground would help reduce the O2 and the flame, while running would give the fire more oxygen.

Rust is the slow oxidation of iron or any metal containing iron. The iron (Fe) combines with oxygen (O2) to form Iron Oxide (Fe2O3) or rust. This is also a chemical reaction, but there is no flame in this chemical reaction.

English Tip of the Day: You REAR children and you RAISE crops and animals. Humans do not give birth to kids (baby goats). Humans give birth to a baby, or an infant. Humans rear their baby, their toddlers, and their children. However, an Ape also gives birth to a baby, and a monkey gives birth to an infant. (Apes and monkeys don’t give birth to kids either).

Let’s look at the correct names for the offspring of some animals.

A bear, a pandas, a lion, and a tiger all give birth to a cub or cubs.
