The Great Blue Heron visits again

The Great Blue Heron is a wading bird. This one likes to fish in the pond at the farm. The Great Blue Heron can be found over most of the North America and Central America, but it is still a treat to see these majestic birds fish and then take flight.

These videos were taken from the porch, so it is hard to realize the true size of this bird. Blue Herons can range up to 54 inches (4.5 feet) in height with a wing span up to 79 inches (6.58 feet). This bird is one of the largest Great Blue Herons that I have seen and stands over 4 feet tall (with its neck straight).

PURPLE MARTINS have finally arrived.

We have had Purple Martin houses up for over two years and have not seen a Purple Martin in all of that time on the farm. My father-in-law used to say that Purple Martins arrived on Valentine’s Day and leave on the 4th of July, so we assumed we were out of luck again this year. However, yesterday a colony of Purple Martins appeared out of the blue, and starting picking houses. It is said that these birds will return to the same spot each year until there is no more room for all of the colony. I assume this part of a colony was seeking new accommodations. We have almost 40 units, so hopefully we will be blessed with this colony for many years to come.
