The Mexican free-tailed bat (also called Brazilian free-tailed bat) is one of the fastest mammals with a horizontal flying speed up to 99mph. It also flies quite high and has been seen at altitudes of over 10,000 feet. It is a medium size bat and although native to America, it usually migrates South for the winter. We love watching for bats at dusk as they hunt for bugs and make amazingly sharp turns in the air. Here are some videos from last night taken from the porch of the farm. Sorry about the quality of the picture, but these bats do not hold still for a good quality video.
