Our first Apples and Pears, Butterflies and Birds

Our first apples have appeared. They do not look terribly appetizing with the spots. We have called the tree company and are waiting for the horticulture expert to call us back. If you look closely, we also have a white fly infestation. We will be spraying NEEME oil this week now that the rain has stopped for a few days.

Below: Butterflies are visiting our flowers, and the caterpillars are eating some of our plants. Like an old friend used to say, ‘everything is a trade-off’.

We were told to pick the pears when they had a little ‘give at the top’ and came off the tree easily. Actually, the pears seemed hard as a rock at the stem, but fell off of the tree when we touched them. It turned out that they were easy to slice and peal and were delicious and crisp. So much for waiting for a ‘soft spot’ around the stem!

Below: We recently removed all of the bird netting on our blueberry bushes because we had harvested the vast majority of ripe berries. This Summer Tanager ( a bird in the Cardinal family) appeared recently in our blueberry bushes after the netting was removed. We soon discovered that she could pick a blueberry and swallow it whole. She appeared to enjoy the berries as much as we had.

Below: Pictures 1-3: Some of our pumpkin patches have spread over the driveway and onto the gravel. They do not seem to mind that there is no dirt. Pictures 4-6- The grapes are growing and ripening, but even the ripened grapes are no larger than a button on your shirt. Hopefully, these muscadine grapes will be larger as the plant matures!
