Below: After three years, the bat house has its first tenant. We clean the mud daubers out of the bat house every six months in hopes that bats will finally make it their home. We even bought some spray to entice a new tenant. During the cleaning process, we found that the first tenant had moved in already and we unintentionally evicted him. He was very angry at being disturbed in the middle of his nap. Hopefully, he will return to the house and call some friends to join him.
Below: Last year the birds enjoyed our blueberries and very few berries made it to our kitchen. This year we used a bird net and the net worked wonders until recently. Last week we noticed that the birds had figured a way into and out of the bird netting. We removed the bird netting, harvested the ripe berries, and used Terry B’s suggestion to cover the rest of the berries with gift bags. Some of the bushes were so full of berries that we used the metal melon bags from last year’s honeydew crop. Some of the berries were dark blue on one side, but not blue on the side that was hidden. We harvested a few berries too early and unfortunately blueberries do not continue to ripen once they are picked. We noticed that the birds pick at the bags to remove them. So far, the berries are still safe.
