Tsunami loves to climb. This talent came in handy in avoiding wet feet yesterday.
Yesterday, the farm received the blessing of an “all day rain”. The plants definitely appreciated the slow rain and the animals will appreciate the the rejuvenated plants.
The garlic we planted has sprouted. It will be a long time before garlic is ready to harvest. It has to make it through the winter before we can dig it up.
The carrots (pictures 1 and 2) and the fall lettuce (pictures 3-5) have also sprouting. Unlike the carrots and the garlic, the lettuce will be ready for harvest in a few short weeks. When harvesting lettuce, it is not necessary to take the entire plant. If you break off the outer larger leaves for use in a salad, the plant will continue to grow and produce more leaves until the first freeze.
Flip through the slideshow below. Needless to say, every plant we check enjoyed the rain. Geraniums (1-3), Pear (4), Raspberry (5), Cilantro (6), Pumpkins (7-13), Watermelon (21-27).
The Zinnias needed to be trimmed and we waited just a little too long. After the rain, most of these plants were laying on the ground due to the weight of water on the flowers. Don’t fret. We finally trimmed the plants and the goats loved the treat of the cut flowers.
The watermelons vines in the goat yard are toast. Not expecting any decent fruit, we finally picked up the remaining watermelon. To our surprise, the watermelons were ripe and delicious.
