Bush String Beans, Cantaloupe, Raccoons, and a HAY Slide!

We got to harvest some of our Bush String Beans yesterday. The bushes started producing beans when they were only a foot tall. These string beans were cooked for dinner and were delicious. (The picture below is only a fraction of the harvest, so everyone did get to eat string beans last night.)

BELOW: This cantaloupe split from too much water at the wrong time. We harvested it and cut away the split. It has a wonderful smell and a very sweet taste. Based on the texture, it could have remained on the vine a few more days, but it is definitely edible. Melons should not to be watered the last week before harvest. However, there was an all day drizzle yesterday. Since this melon was very close to harvesting, the rain could have been just a little too much water at the wrong time.

Below: We thought a bear was messing with our feeder at Rattlesnake field. However, it sprinkled enough to cause some muddy feet and the culprit left its paw prints all over the feeder. It was a raccoon who was smart enough to open the lock and to check each panel that looked like a “door”. He could not remove the stick that we had jammed through one lock, so we placed a zip tie on the other lock to prevent further interference from this visitor.

This was NOT taken at our farm, but it shows that all things do not always turn out as originally designed! Oryne, who is 5, has always been tough and a very good sport. Wonder if she will ever voluntarily do this again. Her dad assured us that Oryne had no complaints. If I had been the next person on that slide, I may have given up my turn!
