The slide show below shows two beautiful Cypress trees (slides 2 and 3) in a freshwater Louisiana lake. The woody roots surrounding the trees are called cypress knees. The exact function is unknown, but the current theory is that that knees aid in aerating the roots of the tree. Slides 7 and 8 show the Crawfish mounds or Chimneys. When the crawfish burrow into the gound, the tunnel my extend for 3 feet or more. Bass, like many people in Louisiana, love to eat crawfish. Seeing this many mounds on the shoreline indicates that this pond has a healthy population of crawfish to keep the bass happy.
These are fat head minnows. This is a good sign of a healthy lake. We caught and released 5 bass this morning. Nothing over two pounds was caught this morning.
