The Dahlias have started blooming again now that the cooler weather is here. By cooler weather, we mean high 80’s and low 90’s during the day.

Bruce took some slow motion and real-time videos of the hummingbirds at the farm. The hummingbirds are going through 32 cups of nectar a day- that is 8 cups of sugar per day. They would eat more if we filled the feeders three times a day. This is the most hummingbirds we have ever had at the farm. Migration time must be near.
Note: If the hummingbird stops flying, he or she will check for predators before drinking.
It looks like the goats have tasted the watermelon. At least it was one of the smaller melons in the yard. Something or someone also trampled the vines. We don’t know if we should blame the goats or the deer, but our next patch will definitely be outside of the goat yard.
The honeydew and the cantaloupe (stripped) continue to get bigger. The instructions say to harvest based on smell. Unlike pumpkins, the stem does not give you hints on when to harvest. The color should change to yellow for the honeydew and a light beige for the cantaloupe.
