The first step in growing mushrooms is to decide what type of mushroom you want to grow. We started with Oyster mushrooms and then expanded.
Each type of mushroom grows best in a specific type or species of tree. You don’t have to go cut down your trees, but you do have to locate logs from the tree specie or species that are best suited for your chosen mushroom. Likewise, you can start with the types of logs you have and pick the mushrooms that grow best in that log.
We ordered plugs or pieces of wooden rods that were impregnated with the mushroom spores and cut in about 1 inch pieces. We drilled corresponding holes in our logs and let the children tap the plugs into place. You then seal the plug with canning wax and put your log in a shady damp place. Depending on your weather, you may have to wet your logs occasionally.
2Funguys have instructions on their website and are very helpful. Your logs may produce more than one year and may produce several times in the same year. (This depends on mushroom and your growing conditions). NEVER eat a mushroom unless you know EXACTLY what you are eating. There are mushrooms which closely resemble edible mushrooms that can make you very ill. info@2funguys.com
