Flowers at the Farm

Today we put in our first two beds of flowers. Below are pictures of the flowers at the farm last year. We will name the flowers and planting instructions and care as we plant this year.

Zinnias are our new all time favorite. They grow in bad or good soil. When the leaves turn brown, you just pull them up and shake. The next crop is right behind the old crop and you will have flowers all spring and summer. You can buy packs of mixed Zinnias or packs of your favorite type of flowers. These flowers range from very small to large. Last year we planted “mixed”, but this year we planted specific colors and sizes we chose from pictures. Stay tuned and we will post as soon as the new seeds sprout.

These are Dahlias. You order bulbs and the bulbs will grow each year if the freeze is not too bad. We were lucky to see growth from all of our bulbs in early March, but the late freeze last weekend killed the new growth. Hopefully, the plants will send up more leaves and we will have Dahlias again this year.

Last year we planted several varieties of sunflowers. Although it was great to see the different types, we picked the flowers and dried the seeds of the flowers we liked the best and those will be the seeds we plant this year.

We tilled the back beds and planted Zinnias on Saturday. Really, for Zinnias, the tilling isn’t even necessary. Zinnias grow with very little attention as long as they receive enough water. Stay tuned for flowers in the next few weeks.
